In order to be eligible to apply to be an Tokyo 2020 Olympic Relay torchbearer, you must fulfill the following basic application requirements.
■Persons born before April 1, 2008
However, persons aged under 18 as of March 1, 2020 (first day of the month in which the Olympic Relay begins) must have the consent of their parent/guardian.
■As a general rule, persons who have a connection with the prefecture in which they wish to participate in the Olympic Relay
(Persons who currently live or previously lived in the prefecture, people who currently work or go to school in the prefecture, people who have family or relatives living in the prefecture, and people who were active in the prefecture in the past.)
■No restrictions regarding nationality or gender
■Persons who are able to carry the Olympic torch safely of their own will.
However, participation with the assistance of support staff (helpers) is also possible when necessary.
■Persons whose purpose is to convey a political or religious message are ineligible to be a torchbearer for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Relay.
■Persons holding a public office as prescribed under the Public Officers Election Act (Diet members, local public body councilors/heads), persons who are or are intending to become candidates for public office, and persons who are the head of a political party or political organization or hold an equivalent position are ineligible to be a torchbearer for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Relay.
■Religious figures are ineligible for selection to be a torchbearer for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Relay based on their religious achievements.
