POWER OF INNOVATION
Cutting-edge NTT communication technology that will change the world
Toward 2020 and Beyond.
As a Tokyo 2020 Gold Partner, NTT provided critical communication services for operating the Games.
It provided a broadcasting network to connect Games venues with the Tokyo Big Sight that served as an International Broadcast Centre (IBC) to televise events such as the opening ceremony to about 600 million people worldwide, as well as various systems for running the event and data network services for the system to release game results to the media, supporting steady operation of the event.
NTT built LAN for the venues, including the 43 Games venues*1, IBC, the Main Press Centre and the Olympic Village, providing various communication services including distributing videos and land lines to associates. All Games venues were turned to 5G, whose commercial services had started in 2020, to offer the most advanced mobile phone services.
Since the event was held amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of technology was more important than ever, including organizing the event with remote meetings and tools, and COVID-19 systems visualizing associates' health status and PCR testing results. The communication services NTT provided played a significant role in all these areas.
It had been feared that the event would face a greater cyber security threat than ever before.
During the event period, NTT ensured cyber security response for communication services, and furthermore, in response to the request from the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, it conducted advance measures and collected threat information in addition to early detection and dropping suspicious packets which enabled them to block all the various daily threats.
All those efforts made it possible to successfully run the event without allowing a single cyber incident to affect the Games' operation.
